    Arabic Growth Trends – from Facebook users to language preferences

    Let’s crunch some numbers! What follows is a roundup of growth trends, from language preferences to Arabic-speakers online.

    - Huge growth online. According to Internet World Stats, there are 202,687,005 Middle Eastern internet users, a 1,648. 2% increase from 2000-2009.

    - Quite a social group! There are now 15 million Facebook users in the Middle East & North Africa (this figure excludes Iran, Israel, Pakistan and Turkey).

    - Language Preference. 50% of Middle East North Africa Facebook users have selected their primary language for using Facebook as English, with 25% preferring French and just 23% Arabic.

    Man vs. Machine: Translation makes headlines in NYT & CNN

    Facebook, which is available in 65 languages, is now offering its collaboration translation tools to others. Websites or apps that uses Facebook Connect can now use the Facebook Platform to get help translating their sites/apps into any language that Facebook Translations supports. In the September 20, 2009 article in The New York Times, “Facebook Offers Translation Tool to Other Sites,” columnist Brad Stone interviewed Ethan Beard, the head of platform at Facebook. Beard addressed the human element of translation and the importance of the understanding of cultural values and idioms. Stone commented that “translation done by people is significantly better than what you would get otherwise.” In other words, using humans as translators is more affective and accurate than translating your website or documents via Machine Translation (MT) services.
